Naming guide
From Beyond the Pale
We use a semi-traditional naming system. This means that prefixes are based on your character's appearance while suffixes are based on appearance, skills or personality. Additionally, WindClan has special allowances for prefixes and suffixes due to their urban environment. We encourage you to bring any questions about names to our Discord in Naming Ask.
Prefixes[edit | edit source]
Prefixes describe the physical appearance of your cat. This includes pelt color, pelt pattern, fur texture and general size (but not eye color.) Prefixes are typically inspired by nature, such as animals, trees, flowers and bodies of water. The only exception to this rule is WindClan, who live in an urban environment and often name their kits after human items.
Acceptable prefix types and examples[edit | edit source]
- Plants (Chicory-, Oak-, Yarrow-, Lily-, Bark-, Apple-)
- Animals (Squirrel-, Fox-, Frog-, Hawk-, Cricket-, Crab-)
- Nature (Rock-, Stone-, Mud-, Thorn-, Stick-)
- Water (Creek-, Stream-, Puddle-, Lake-)
- Large cats (Leopard-, Lion-, Tiger-)
Unacceptable prefix types and examples[edit | edit source]
- Eye color (ex. Blue- for their blue eyes)
- Negative prefixes (Dead-, Broken-)
- Verbs (Running-, Leaping-, Watching-)
- Non-common names (i.e. genus names, such as Panthera-)
Acceptable WindClan prefix types and examples[edit | edit source]
- Human food (Hamburger-, Flour-, Bacon, Pizza-, Tea-, Monitor-, Soda-)
- Gems (Diamond-, Ruby-, Sapphire-)
- Electronics (Microwave-, CD-, Fridge-, Radio-)
- Household objects (Candle-, Yarn-, Kettle-, Pan-, Sofa-)
- Exotic animals (Hyena-, Penguin-, Tarantula-, Koala-)
- ... and more!
Suffixes[edit | edit source]
Suffixes describe the physical appearance, skill set or personality traits of your cat. We are much more relaxed with suffixes and allow most to be used as long as they can be explained. Additionally, WindClan has recently allowed usage of non-traditional suffixes with the naming of Palesword.
Acceptable suffix types and examples[edit | edit source]
- Appearance (-fur, -pelt, -face, -stripe, -spot)
- Personality (-cloud, -heart, -belly, -berry)
- Skills (-tail, -claw, -whisker, -foot)
- Animal (-wolf, -bear, -fox)
WindClan's new naming tradition is a very recent development. Only newly named warriors can be created with a non-traditional suffix. If you have any questions about if a suffix would work, please ask staff or Crow (Inkstar's roleplayer and WindClan leader.)
