After receiving a vision from StarClan, Mountainstar withdrew ThunderClan from attending Gatherings and started to lay traps in their territory. When RiverClan began to push into ThunderClan's territory in a campaign of expansion, Mountainstar established ThunderClan's first underground base.

Under Redstar's leadership, ThunderClan began to live underground full time. The cave exploration system and Tunnel Tongue were developed during this time.
