Faceclaims
From Beyond the Pale
Faceclaims are images (or a set of images) used to represent a character.. On Beyond the Pale, we require each character to have a unique faceclaim. Each faceclaim can only be used by one character at a time, except in cases of a.) twins and b.) parent/child where the child uses younger photos of the parent.
At this time, we allow both photos and artwork to be used as faceclaims.
Photo Faceclaims
Photos are the primary faceclaim on Beyond the Pale. We only allow photos that are Creative Commons or photos that you have been specifically given permission to use (often called by the community as "perms".)
Some suggested websites to search for Creative Commons photos:
- Flickr (with CC filter)
- Pixabay
- Pexels
- Unsplash
Photo Manipulation
We allow photo manipulation (also called "manips") on the site. Photos may be manipulated to make minor changes (such as eye color or slightly changing pelt color), as long as allowed within the CC license.
If characters become mutated, their original photos can be manipulated more extremely.
Art Faceclaims
Some may prefer (or, in the case of extreme mutations, have no other option!) to use artwork instead of photos for their character's faceclaims. We allow this with some stipulations to ensure the tone of the site is maintained.
Unless otherwise specified by a mutation, your character's design must be semi-realistic. (Please note that this means the design - not your art style!) We require:
- Natural pelt colors
- Natural eye colors
- A base realistic pelt pattern
- i.e. tabby, calico, spotted, pointed
We currently give allowances for:
- Unusual markings, colour patterns or spotting
- Unlikely pelt/eye color combinations
- i.e. a black cat with blue eyes
While not required, we encourage you to create a design sheet or full body illustration of your character to include in their bio.
