We allow photo manipulation (also called "manips") on the site. Photos may be manipulated to make minor changes (such as eye color or slightly changing pelt color), as long as allowed within the CC license.
We allow photo manipulation (also called "manips") on the site. Similar to art faceclaims, we allow photos to be manipulated as long as they remain semi-realistic. Please review the guidelines listed in [[#Art Faceclaims]]. If using CC images, make sure that the license allows for adaptations. (Hint: if it says "NoDerivatives" anywhere in the license, it's a no-go!)

* You must have the rights to use the artwork and character design.
** You must have either drawn the art, commissioned the art, or have had the art drawn specifically for you.
** Currently, you do not have to provide proof that you have the rights.
* If the artwork was commissioned or gifted, please provide a link to the artist's account on their preferred platform.
* You may use publicly available character generations (i.e. picrew) as long as they allow personal use.

Unless otherwise specified by a mutation, your character's design must be '''semi-realistic'''. (Please note that this means the design - not your art style!) We require:

Faceclaims are images (or a set of images) used to represent a character.. On Beyond the Pale, we require each character to have a unique faceclaim. Each faceclaim can only be used by one character at a time, except in cases of a.) twins and b.) parent/child where the child uses younger photos of the parent.

At this time, we allow both photos and artwork to be used as faceclaims.

Photo Faceclaims

Photos are the primary faceclaim on Beyond the Pale. We only allow photos that are Creative Commons or photos that you have been specifically given permission to use (often called by the community as "perms".)

Some suggested websites to search for Creative Commons photos:

  • Flickr (with CC filter)
  • Pixabay
  • Pexels
  • Unsplash

Art Faceclaims

Some may prefer (or, in the case of extreme mutations, have no other option!) to use artwork instead of photos for their character's faceclaims. We allow this with some stipulations to ensure the tone of the site is maintained. We require:

  • You must have the rights to use the artwork and character design.
    • You must have either drawn the art, commissioned the art, or have had the art drawn specifically for you.
    • Currently, you do not have to provide proof that you have the rights.
  • If the artwork was commissioned or gifted, please provide a link to the artist's account on their preferred platform.
  • You may use publicly available character generations (i.e. picrew) as long as they allow personal use.

Unless otherwise specified by a mutation, your character's design must be semi-realistic. (Please note that this means the design - not your art style!) We require:

  • Natural pelt colors
  • Natural eye colors
  • A base realistic pelt pattern
    • i.e. tabby, calico, spotted, pointed

We currently give allowances for:

  • Unusual markings, colour patterns or spotting
  • Unlikely pelt/eye color combinations
    • i.e. a black cat with blue eyes

While not required, we encourage you to create a design sheet or full body illustration of your character to include in their bio.
